Hours of Service
- Open daily between 8.15a.m. and 3.30p.m.
- Available to students at lunchtime except Thursdays
- Open most Tuesday afternoons until 5:00 for Homework Club (parental permission required)
- Closed Thursday afternoons for cleaning
- Closed to students during recess for re-shelving, etc.
Library Rules and Policies
Library General Rules:
- A quiet atmosphere
- Adherence to loan regulations
- Space for booking two classes (fiction and non-fiction areas)
- Carrels set aside for use by seniors during study periods
- No eating, drinking or smoking
- Care of resources, furniture and fittings, and equipment
Loan Regulations:
- No restriction on quantity of staff loans during the year, but materials are to be returned by November for the annual stocktake
- Years 7 to 9 may borrow two fiction and two non-fiction books for two weeks
- Years 10 to 12 may borrow three fiction and three non-fiction books for two weeks
- All student loans are renewable unless reserved by another student
- All videos are on overnight loan to students
- Reference materials and audio-visual equipment are on restricted loan
Overdue books are levied a fine of 10 cents per day.
Equipment Usage:
- Housed in the Audio-Visual room of the Library
- All items bar-coded for circulation
- Advance bookings recommended for popular items (e.g. data projectors) to ensure availability at lesson times
- Students are not permitted into the audio-visual room, unless accompanied by a member of staff, for security purposes
- Equipment serviced as soon as possible if faults are reported to the Library Staff
Library Materials Collection Development Policy
- Library materials are selected by the Library Co-Ordinator in consultation with relevant KLA Co-ordinators, Subject Teachers and students (via book and media representatives, displays, "on approval" purchases, visits to bookshops, etc.)
- Materials are chosen to achieve two goals: (a) to supplement teaching\learning programmes offered in each key learning area (b) to enrich and support the co-curricular programmes of both students and staff
- Materials for inclusion in the Library collection are selected according to the following criteria: (a) suitability for usage by both students and staff members (b) accuracy and authenticity of content (c) appropriateness, up-to dateness and relevance of subject matter (d) suitability of language level to students' abilities
- Materials dealing with controversial subjects (sex education, drug use, etc.) are kept on restricted access and loaned with parental approval
Responsibilities of the Library Staff:
- Library Coordinator directly responsible to the Principal
- Library Assistant directly responsible to the Teacher-Librarian
- Accept suggestions for new purchases from class teachers, students, parents and all members of the school community
- Select, process and organise Library materials
- In-service and encourage staff in Library usage
- Teach and encourage students in Library usage
- Formulate and preserve Library rules
- Maintain Library resources and facilities
Responsibilities of Students:
- Avail themselves of Library facilities to further their educational and personal opportunities
- Obey Library rules
- Respect the authority of Library staff
- Respect the authority of teaching staff in the Library
- Sign and obey the “Acceptable Use Agreement” with respect to Internet usage
- Care for Library resources, furniture, fittings and equipment
Responsibilities of Teaching Staff:
- Responsible to the Principal and the Library Coordinator regarding conduct of Library classes
- Responsible to the Library Coordinator regarding Library usage
- Advise Library staff on choice of Library materials that will support both curricular and personal needs
- KLA Coordinators allocate 5% of total Departmental Budget spending toward the purchase of Library resources
- Supervise students' use of the Internet, according to the terms and conditions laid down in the “Acceptable Use Agreement” in students' diaries, to ensure they are not exposed to potentially morally and/or physically damaging information (sexual pornography, explosives, etc.)
- Co-operate with Library staff in instructing students in the proper use of Library facilities
- Collaborate with Library staff in preserving and enforcing Library rules
