Chess
Chess is played on a regular basis at Holy Cross, and over the past five years the art rooms have become a hive of activity at lunchtime, with many boys simply observing.
Recent tests have clearly demonstrated that chess develops concentration and extends the attention span. Reason, logic and imagination are all brought into play in a simple game and with regular practice, become a part of the student’s ability to focus and give better attention in both exams and the classroom.
At Holy Cross College this year, we are fielding 4 teams (2 Intermediate and 2 Junior). These teams will play in the Schools Chess Teams Competition, which is organized and sponsored by the New South Wales Chess League. Matches are held on Fridays in Term 2 and commence at 4:30pm. Most matches are finished by 6pm.
The games are held on a home-and-away basis and HCC plays in the Northern Region. On the ‘away’ Fridays (Approximately 6 or 7 days), parents are asked to help us ferry students to the different venues and then return them to school. This is usually worked out on roster style system.
Our junior team Years 7 & 8 won this division in 2006.
Other opportunities are also available to play in a variety of competitions throughout Sydney including the HCC Chess Competition, in which the coveted HCC Trophy is offered.
